Computer hacks affect thousands of computer users and businesses every year. But as the top ten most vulnerable places in the US have been revealed, Data Memory Systems, one of the leading suppliers of commuter memory and accessories, has urged computer users to take extra care when visiting these hotpots.
The newly-released research, carried out by internet security firm, Webroot, analyzed its threat intelligence platform data from 2016, as well as other services, in order to create a list of the top 10 malware hit cities. And surprisingly, it isn’t the biggest cities that computer users need to look out for. Houston, Chicago and Phoenix came out on top, with more than 150,000 affected devices between them last year. And according to the computer experts, this has drilled home just how important it is to protect personal devices at all times.
Speaking about the revelations, a spokesperson from Data Memory Systems, said, “Although everyone is aware of the importance of security, the truth of the matter is that many still ignore the warnings. The fact that many of the cities you would expect to see high up on the list either don’t appear or are lower down, highlights just how important it is to take security seriously all of the time, but especially as people travel around the country – as well as overseas.”
New York City, which is the US’ most populous city, doesn’t appear in the top 10, coming in at number 13 on the list. Los Angeles, which is America’s second most populated city, does however feature on the list – at number six – below Denver, San Antonio and Dallas, respectively. Bringing the top 10 to a close are Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Charlotte.
Although this underlines just how at risk computer owners are when at home and out and about, there are steps they can take to protect their machines and devices, according to the computer experts.
Free public Wi-Fi for instance may be a god-send to holidaymakers and those who remote work on the go, but bad actors design networks that look like they provide free internet access. But reality thieves use these networks to intercept personal data. When it comes to personal security, strong passwords should always be used, while two-factor authentication is also advised when this is possible. It’s been reported that code-breaking programs can crack an eight-character password in 15 minutes, so getting passwords right at the beginning can save a lot of heartache further down the line. Lastly, the experts at DMS suggest making sure antivirus software is kept up to date in order to warn users and block and pending attacks.
