Computer Memory Provider Encourages Owners To Get To Know Their Computers

Research has found that almost half of people do not know how much RAM memory they have in their computer, and it is emerging that a number of those who own computers and laptops are not acquainted with the memory options and upgrades available to them. Data Memory Systems, a US supplier of computer memory solutions, is encouraging people to learn more about their computer’s components to better judge whether an upgrade is necessary.

Justin Briere, of Data Memory Systems, which supplies PC and Apple memory all across the US, says, “When people buy laptops or computers nowadays, they focus on superficial elements like high-definition screens and the aesthetic of the device, rather than what’s going on under the hood. Almost 50% of people have no idea how much RAM memory they have, which means that these people will also have no idea how much RAM they are using, and whether they will need to increase it in the future.”

RAM memory, or ‘random-access memory’ is a form of computer data storage which allows data to be accessed in any order (hence the ‘random’ element). The more RAM a computer has, the more multi-tasking it will be able to carry out, and the higher level of performance it will have. An absence of RAM means that the processor within a computer has to write data back and forth to the hard drive, as opposed to the easily accessible RAM memory; it is essentially a short-term buffer between the processer and the hard drive, with data that can be quickly read.

Increasing the amount of memory within a unit will always offer a speed boost in the performance of a computer and how many tasks it can carry out at the same time. Unfortunately, those who do not know how much RAM they are have are also unlikely to understand that upgrading their memory and adding more RAM memory will increase the performance of their computer or laptop and allow them to work at higher speeds.

Computers often have a maximum allowance for the amount of RAM that can be installed, so it is important for people looking to upgrade their computers to check this out first. This can be based on the amount of memory slots that are available; for example, a laptop which has 4GB of RAM in in two 2GB segments, with two extra slots, could easily be upgraded to 8GB by simply adding two more blocks of 2GB. A computer which has 2GB of RAM and only two slots could be upgraded by replacing them both with 2GB modules.
