With the increasing adoption of cloud-based software and storage, many would be forgiven for thinking that external hard drives are a thing of the past. But that’s simply not the case according to one of America’s leading suppliers of computer memory and accessories.

Relied upon by start-ups, SMEs and multinational corporations, as well as individual computer users, there’s no denying that the cloud has its place in this ‘always on’ society. But it would be foolish to rely solely on cloud storage as it’s more susceptible to hacking, can cost a lot of money to maintain on a large scale, and has limits on capacities.”
There’s been numerous reports of cloud systems being hacked over the last decade. Celebrities have been a target of cloud hacking for many years, with this personal data released and shared across the internet. But it’s not just celebrities that are at risk. Anyone who uses these storage methods could find themselves the victim of hacking. Just last year for example it was reported that around 60 million logins belonging to Dropbox had been released[1], compromising the security of every account affected. More recently, reports of another iCloud hack have surfaced, with hackers demanding money from Apple to keep accounts safe. Although this appears to have been nothing more than a threat, it is very possible that hackers will continue to find their way through security.
Traditional hard drives on the other hand do not connect to the internet. They simply plug in to machines and store files, folders and any other information from there. Leaving these important documents safe from hackers and data breeches, the chances of data being lost or stolen is minimal.
Hard drives are also much more cost-effective, according to the experts at DMS. Where cloud storage requires an ongoing fee that rises with increased storage, hard drives set users back one single fee. And thanks to their
advancements, a large device with a couple of terabytes of storage will now only cost a couple of hundred dollars.
