There’s no denying that the world is becoming increasingly digital-oriented. And with that comes higher consumptions of energy. Scientists have recently predicted that computers will require more energy than the world generates by 2040 due to increasing number of developments and features. Data Memory Systems, one of the premium providers of computer memory and accessories in the US, has urged the industry to look at the hardware it creates in order to make fundamental improvements to enable them to become more energy efficient.
Justin Briere, Senior Account Manager at Data Memory Systems said, “We knew that the world was relying more heavily on computers, but this revelation is somewhat surprising to us.”
The prediction was originally outlined in a report released last year, however it is only now that it is reaching worldwide attention thanks to the same group issuing a final roadmap assessment on the outlook for the semiconductor industry.
The projection, by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), could mean that the planet’s ability to keep pace with Moore's Law – the idea that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years – is about to disappear. According to the group, if things continue going the way they have been with regards to today's approaches to chip engineering, "computing will not be sustainable by 2040, when the energy required for computing will exceed the estimated world's energy production".
At present, chip engineers stack small transistors in three dimensions in order to keep up with Moore's Law and improve performance. However the SIA says that this approach won't work forever considering how much energy will be lost in future, increasingly denser chips.
Justin, continues, “It’s imperative that we look at the positive changes we can make now in order to maintain the world’s energy levels.”

About
DMS’ philosophy is to supply the customer with the best quality memory at the best possible price. Having been supplying the electronics industry with high quality components since 1963 and memory modules since 1987, they were one of the first original memory companies to support Apple computer – and have been doing so for over 20 years. They also support a vast array of computer memory for PCs and servers.
